Turkey crown or whole turkey: which should you choose?
Compare a boneless turkey crown with a whole bird, from white and dark meat to carving, oven space and leftovers.
A Christmas turkey should suit the people around your table, rather than the size of somebody else’s celebration. The first useful question is whether your family enjoys both breast and leg meat, or mostly wants slices of white meat.
What is a turkey crown?
A traditional crown is the breast section on the bone, without the legs. A boneless turkey crown has the bones removed too. Check the product description carefully: cooking instructions and serving estimates for a bone-in crown do not automatically apply to a boneless one.
The boneless option is straightforward to carve and makes good use of a smaller roasting tin. It is particularly practical when you want neat slices, have limited oven space or are serving another main dish alongside it.
When a whole turkey makes sense
A whole bird offers breast and dark meat, a traditional centrepiece and a carcass that can be used for stock after carving. The trade-off is more space in the fridge and oven, and a little more work at the carving board. Buy according to the supplier’s serving guide, allowing for appetites and the leftovers you actually want.
Think beyond the roasting tin
Measure your available fridge space before ordering a large frozen bird: it needs room to thaw safely. Read the cooking instructions supplied with your chosen product rather than using a crown timetable for a whole turkey.
If your family prefers white meat and easy carving, start with a boneless crown. If everyone looks forward to choosing a leg or breast slice, a whole bird may be the happier fit.
