What size boneless turkey crown do you need?

Plan a boneless turkey crown around guest numbers, appetites, accompaniments and sensible leftovers.

Choosing a turkey crown is easier when you separate the weight of the meat from the number of dishes on the table. A boneless crown provides a greater proportion of carveable meat than the same weight of a whole bird, so whole-turkey serving tables can lead you astray.

A useful starting calculation

For planning, allow approximately 200–250g of raw boneless turkey per adult for a generous Christmas meal with plenty of sides. This is a kitchen estimate, not a guaranteed serving yield: cooking loss, trimming and appetite all affect the result.

Using that range, six adults would need roughly 1.2–1.5kg, eight around 1.6–2kg, and ten around 2–2.5kg. Follow the product’s own serving guidance where supplied, and round up if turkey is the only substantial main course.

Allow for your actual menu

Gammon, beef, stuffing and pigs in blankets all contribute to the meal. If you are offering several meats, smaller turkey portions may be enough. Count children according to their appetites rather than automatically allocating every child a full adult portion.

Plan leftovers deliberately

A few extra slices for sandwiches are useful. Several kilograms without fridge space are less so. Decide what you will use and how you will chill it before increasing the order.

Finally, check that the joint fits your tin and that your oven thermometer and meat probe are ready. Portion planning gets dinner started; checking the thickest part is thoroughly cooked gets it safely to the table.
